Apple Search Ads for Fintech: The Hottest Traffic You Keep Underrating
Apple Search Ads is traffic from someone standing in the App Store right now, typing a query. They aren't scrolling a feed or watching stories. They're searching. Intent is off the charts. And yet half of app marketers treat ASA as an afterthought, running one mush of a campaign for everything.
That's a mistake. ASA demands structure, and with the right structure it delivers the best CPA in your media plan. No exaggeration.
Three campaign types you must never mix
Brand, Competitor, Generic. These are three different worlds with different bidding logic, and keeping them in one campaign means burning budget.
Brand defense means bidding on your own name. "Why pay for my own brand, people will find me anyway?" Because a competitor will buy your brand query and sit above you. Someone searches for you and sees another app first. A brand campaign costs pennies and plugs that hole. Don't skimp on it.
Competitor campaigns intercept people searching for your rivals. The most aggressive and most expensive type. It works, but it needs supervision: conversion is lower than on brand, because the person wasn't looking for you.
Generic covers category queries. "Broker," "investing," "trading app." The highest volume and the most expensive in terms of competition. Here you're up against the entire market.
Separate budgets, separate bids. Otherwise generic eats the money that was supposed to go to cheap, high-intent brand traffic.
Search Match as a free keyword generator
A trick few people use systematically. You launch a discovery campaign with Search Match, Apple picks the queries it shows you on, and a couple of weeks later you export the actual search terms that drove installs.
Those terms are gold. You move the best ones into an exact campaign with a controlled bid and leave discovery running to keep collecting new ones. What you get is a self-learning system: Search Match finds, exact scales.
Negative keywords and cannibalization
Mandatory hygiene. Add your own brand as negative keywords in the generic campaign, or generic will start showing on brand queries and you'll pay an expensive generic bid for what the brand campaign would have delivered for pennies.
It's an invisible leak that almost nobody plugs. Check the search terms in your generic campaign — your brand is almost certainly in there, and you're overpaying for it.
ASA attribution
Connect ASA to your MMP through the API so installs are attributed correctly instead of falling into Organic. On iOS, with SKAN in the mix, that's a hassle of its own, but without it you won't see real performance and you'll cut campaigns that are actually working.
One contrarian take to close on: for a fintech app, ASA should be the first channel you set up, not the last. The hottest traffic, the highest intent, the most predictable CPA. Everyone fusses over UAC and Meta while a half-configured ASA quietly delivers the best installs in the account.
